Right there I knew the movie is at trouble as Luhrmann started 'Moulin Rouge' off with Ewan McGregor reflecting on an exhilarating past as well as a great love that has long since passed him by, and Maguire it's essentially doing the same thing here. From that point it's clear this movie won't have a cheerful ending understanding that the characters we see enjoying themselves has decided to experience an endless suffering. We're not even five minutes into 'The Great Gatsby,' and now we can already tell this is familiar territory for Luhrmann, excessively familiar.

In Gatsby's world, the difference between old and new financial resources are not simply a theoretical divide, it is a physical one. The “old money” elite (including Daisy Buchanan, the object of Jay Gatsby's affection) are in the East Egg neighborhood, even though the riff-raff nouveau riche, including Gatsby himself, are relegated to West Egg. To the uninformed observer, both the Eggs are virtually identical, but towards the Eggs' respective inhabitants, differences are apparent everywhere. Whenever Gatsby visits the Buchanans in East Egg, he might as well be wearing a large red “EE” (a whole new kind of Scarlet Letter) on his lapel.
